Filipe Luís says Monaco will continue their pursuit of Erik Lira after failing to land the Mexico international this summer.

According to Get French Football News, Monaco tracked the Cruz Azul midfielder throughout the window but were blocked by a lack of non-EU slots. Folarin Balogun’s expected move to Everton would have opened one, however it did not materialise.

Chief executive Thiago Scuro said talks with Cruz Azul were positive and that a deal had been readied, with the player set to travel. He explained the agreement made Balogun’s exit a condition to free the foreign, non-EU place, so Monaco could not bring Lira in.

Scuro said calling Lira to apologise was a human and particularly hard part of the window.

Asked about revisiting the move in January, he said it depends on several things. Monaco are not in a position to ask Cruz Azul to keep waiting, though Lira remains a player who has their attention and respect.

With Luís still keen on recruiting the midfielder, a future transfer remains a possibility.
