Flamengo dismissed Filipe Luís early on Tuesday after two runners-up finishes in 2026. The board have moved quickly to find a replacement.
According to Coluna Do Fla, Roberto De Zerbi, admired by director José Boto, is available after leaving Olympique de Marseille in February. He departed after 69 games, with a 5-0 defeat to PSG cited among the reasons.
Boto has previously said he would pick Antonio Conte to win, but felt De Zerbi would suit Flamengo’s style after working with him at Shakhtar. He described the Italian as a genuine genius, a little crazy but brilliant, before Filipe Luís renewed in December.
De Zerbi has coached clubs since 2013. Between 2021 and 2022 he won the Ukrainian Super Cup with Shakhtar Donetsk, the only trophy of his career so far.
Despite Boto’s preference, Flamengo are close to appointing Leonardo Jardim to replace Filipe Luís. The Portuguese is expected to arrive in Rio de Janeiro later on Tuesday to take charge before the Carioca final.
Flamengo face Fluminense at the Maracanã at 18:00 Brasília time on Sunday in the Campeonato Carioca final.
