Monaco are poised to appoint Filipe Luís as head coach on a deal running to 2028, and the move comes with an unusual financial catch. He had previously been linked with Benfica. According to Glorioso 1904, the club are ready to bear penalties while he completes his top-level accreditation.

Because he does not yet hold a UEFA Pro licence, Monaco would accept fines of up to €25,000 per match until he gains equivalence.

That licensing issue also cooled interest from Bayer Leverkusen, where talks had progressed, but the lack of certification proved a hurdle for the German club.

Luís currently holds a CONMEBOL licence that is expected to be recognised as equivalent to UEFA Pro in around a year and a half once requirements are met. Despite the wait, Monaco have chosen to proceed, signalling confidence in the Brazilian.

Despite a turbulent exit from Flamengo, he leaves with credit in Rio. In 2025 he guided the team to the Brasileirão and the Taça Libertadores, achievements that elevated his profile in Europe.
