There is still all to play for heading into the final weekend of La Liga 2, with automatic promotion, play-off positions and relegation to be decided this upcoming Sunday.
Who can be promoted to La Liga?
After a dramatic gameweek 41, Real Valladolid sealed their immediate return to La Liga after two stoppage time goals completed a memorable comeback win against Villarreal B. The final automatic promotion place will go to either Leganes or Eibar. Valladolid know they can lift the Segunda title by matching Leganes’ result too.
Leganes are in poll position to go up automatically, needing just a point at home to Elche to be promoted to Spain’s first tier. If Leganes get a result, then Eibar will have to settle for a play-off spot. Should Leganes were to lose to Elche however, Eibar would be promoted with a win at home to play-off hopefuls Real Oviedo.
A Leganes loss and an Eibar win would mean both clubs would be level on 71 points, however Eibar have a better head-to-head record, therefore would be promoted. Borja Jimenez’s team are strong favourites to achieve automatic promotion however and could still be promoted as champions, if they win their final match and already promoted Valladolid fail to beat Tenerife.
Who will finish in the play-off spots?
Either Leganes or Eibar will be joined in the play-offs by Espanyol, who guaranteed a top six finish yesterday with a goalless draw at Amorebieta. The final two spots are still to be decided however, with Real Oviedo, Racing Santander and Sporting Gijon all hopeful of competing in June’s play-offs.
Oviedo head into Sunday in fifth place on 64 points, Racing occupy the final play-off position, also on 64 points and Gijon sit seventh on 62 points after a vital win over Eibar yesterday. If Gijon fail to beat Eldenese on the final day, Oviedo and Racing will play in the play-offs.
However, if Rojiblancos win, Racing will need a draw against already relegated Villarreal B to be sure of a place in the play-offs. This is where it gets interesting – Oviedo will need to beat third place Eibar away from home if Gijon win and Santander draw or win. Despite being the best placed team heading into the final week, it could be that Oviedo drop out of the play-offs, as Luis Carrion’s team look to have the toughest fixture.
Who will be relegated to the third tier?
Villarreal B, FC Andorra and AD Alcorcon were condemned to relegation on Sunday after all failing to win. One more team will be relegated and Amorebieta head into the final weekend in the relegation zone whilst Mirandes sit just outside, one point above the team from the Basque Country.
Incredibly, the two clubs play each other on the final day in what is surely the standout fixture on Sunday. The permutations are simple – if Mirandes draw or win, they will survive and Amorebieta will be relegated to the third tier.
If Amorebieta beat the home team, they will stay up at the expense of Los Rojillos. Unlike the final weekend in La Liga, the last day of the 2023/24 Segunda Division is full of mouthwatering jeopardy and promises to be unmissable.
