With Liverpool entering Istanbul on the back of a dramatic late win against Atletico Madrid, the stage felt set for Arne Slot’s side to show their authority in Group F. Yet, inside one of the loudest stadiums in world football, the Reds found themselves out-battled, out-muscled, and ultimately undone by Victor Osimhen’s decisive first-half strike.

Selhurst Park had been hostile at the weekend, but Istanbul turned the volume up another level. Galatasaray pressed high and threw themselves into challenges from the opening whistle, setting a ferocious tempo that Liverpool struggled to keep pace with. Yilmaz saw an early attempt smothered by the eventual man of the match, Alisson Becker, which set the tone for the evening.
That early intensity paid off early. On 15 minutes, a quick transition down the left saw the hosts bounce back from a moment where they could have conceded. A drive into the box saw Dominic Szobozlai catch the attacker with a flailing arm and a penalty was awarded. Victor Osimhen’s technique was superb, and the driven spot kick was successful.
From there, the Reds saw more of the ball, pinning Galatasaray into their defensive third. Yet their possession was predictable — Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch couldn’t quicken the tempo, while Florian Wirtz found little space to create.
The best chance of the half came when Hugo Ekitike latched onto a clipped through ball, but in one-on-one with Fernando Muslera, he struck tamely at the veteran goalkeeper before Cody Gakpo fired into a man on the line.
The half ended in deficit and never looked likely to be reversed.
Liverpool began the second period with far more urgency, moving the ball quickly and committing men forward. Frimpong enjoyed more of the ball down the right, though his delivery was consistently wasteful, much to the frustration of teammates.
The turning point came at 55 minutes when Alisson Becker, already the standout performer, went down in pain after making a sharp stop from a close-range effort. He was replaced by Giorgi Mamardashvili, and though the Georgian settled well, the psychological blow was clear and made him unavailable for the near future.
Arne Slot reacted with a triple substitution just past the hour mark, introducing Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, and Conor Bradley to add pace and directness. Almost immediately, Isak saw a tame shot collected, while Florian Wirtz showed moments of creation.
Despite relentless pressure — 67% possession and 16 shots in total — Liverpool never truly looked in control. Galatasaray defended with ferocious discipline, snapping into challenges and launching counterattacks whenever Liverpool overcommitted. Van Dijk and Konaté had to make crucial interventions to prevent the lead doubling, with the latter looking more Dejan Lovren than elite.
By the final whistle, frustration was etched across Liverpool’s faces. They had dominated the ball, created half-chances, and forced the tempo, yet the lack of cutting edge and the injury to Alisson defined the evening.
Liverpool left Istanbul with more questions than answers, much like the weekend. Back-to-back defeats have punctured their early-season momentum, and with Alisson’s fitness now a pressing concern, Arne Slot faces his first major test as Liverpool manager.
This was a game of fine margins, but in Europe, those margins matter. Galatasaray were clinical and courageous, Liverpool blunt and hesitant. The trip to Chelsea at the weekend now carries added pressure as the Reds look to reset their season before doubt begins to spread.
Full-Time Result: Galatasaray 1 – 0 Liverpool
