The 2026 Finalissima between Argentina and Spain is on the brink of postponement, with uncertainty deepening less than two weeks before the planned kick-off.
The match had been announced for Friday 27 March at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, but that venue has been discarded and, according to SuperDepor.com, deadlock has grown between UEFA, the Spanish federation and the AFA over where and when to play.
The fixture pits Euro 2024 winners Spain against Copa América 2024 holders Argentina, a showpiece for Europe and South America. UEFA is keen to keep it on the calendar, while the South American side oppose staging it at the Santiago Bernabéu, a proposal driven from Spain.
Backed by Conmebol, the AFA argues the final should be on neutral ground and has tabled a last proposal to play on 31 March at an alternative European venue. Italy, Portugal and England have been floated, with Rome or Milan among the mooted options.
The prospect of a delay has gathered pace. Without an immediate agreement, this month’s edition could be dropped and each federation may instead line up separate friendlies in the FIFA window. A swift decision is expected as the calendar tightens.
Relaunched by UEFA and Conmebol in 2022, the Finalissima last saw Argentina beat Italy 3-0 at Wembley with Lionel Messi starring. The Spain tie still appears on UEFA’s official listings, but the unresolved venue and date now threaten one of the year’s most anticipated internationals.
