Tonight is Finalissima!

OK, maybe that does not actually mean much on its own, so here is why you should care.

What is Finalissima?

Yeah, good question. Sounds grand, doesn’t it? And it’s between Italy and Argentina. And there’s even a trophy and it was last won by a team involving Diego Maradona.

But what is it?

Well, it’s obviously a game between last summer’s Euros winners (Italy) and the Copa América winners (Argentina) to determine who is the champion of, well, the two winners of those competitions. A bit like a Supercup.

Why have I never heard of it?

Because it has only ever been played twice and the last one of those was in 1993, when Argentina beat Denmark.

Back then it was called the Artemio Franchi Cup, named after a former president of the Italian Football Federation and Uefa.

The first edition was played in 1985, with France beating Uruguay 2-0, then it wasn’t played in 1989 before it returned in 1993 and a star-studded Argentina side won on penalties.

Where is it taking place?

Wembley, where Italy clinched the Euros last summer, has been selected as a neutral venue.

It will be 90 minutes only, going directly to penalties if the teams are level at full-time.

Is it back for good?

This is unclear right now but the game will, presumably, take place every four years from now on, so jump on board with it now!
