Corinthians’ talks to extend Memphis Depay’s contract are at a decisive stage, with finances, performance and politics in play. His deal ends on 31 July and, despite four transfer bans, a post-deadline renewal is seen as legally possible.

According to Globo.com, president Osmar Stabile is weighing input from football, finance and political advisers. The main hurdle is cost, with figures at the club doubting Memphis’ value for money in the current crisis.

Stabile had said partner firms were needed and that Corinthians would pay nothing from July, then came a proposal judged viable. Memphis wants to stay, accepted lower salary and bonuses, and seeks three years to July 2029. The club offered two and resists longer terms.

His camp says he has conceded enough. Even so, pay remains high and more than R$ 40 million is owed from his current deal, which could be staggered over 36 months. Critics question form, fitness and the political cost linked to Augusto Melo.

This year he has 14 games for Corinthians, one goal and one assist, after 51 matches, 12 goals and 10 assists last year. At the World Cup, the 32-year-old was a second-half substitute in all three group games and did not play in the Morocco elimination.

His side says he has trained and would be ready for Fernando Diniz, who backs keeping him as signings are banned and sales needed. Executive Marcelo Paz rebuilt relations with his camp. Stabile has the final say, with a swift but uncertain outcome expected.
