Phil Foden has been sent clear advice from manager Pep Guardiola over his Manchester City future after more goalscoring excellence from the 24-year-old at the weekend.
The latest insistence from Manchester City over a prolonged stay at the football club for one of their primary attacking stars comes just days after Erling Haaland stunned the sport by penning a mammoth agreement with the club.
Amid long-standing conversations regarding a potential move to Spain within his first five years of being at Manchester City, the 24-year-old striker committed his future to the club for the next 10 years by signing a brand new nine-and-a-half year deal on Friday.
That move will take Erling Haaland through to just before his 34th birthday and opens up a remarkable opportunity for the goal-machine to break every record in sight within Manchester City and English football.
But the ambition does not stop there for the club in terms of ensuring that their very best players do not see their long-term futures anywhere but the Etihad Stadium.
Speaking after Manchester City’s rout of Ipswich at Portman Road, in which Phil Foden scored his third and fourth goals for the club in just six days, Pep Guardiola issued his belief that the Stockport-born playmaker could remain at the Etihad Stadium for the whole of his career.
“He should not [leave]! He can be a one club man, finish his career at Man City playing for many, many years! He was born here, an incredible Man City fan, and at that age with the amount of games, goals, assists, work ethic,” Guardiola told reporters.
The ongoing season has been far from straight forward for Foden, who has struggled to find the form of the last campaign that won him the Premier League’s Player of the Season award for the first time.
“We talked many times in the last month and he’s completely different than the beginning of the season,” said Guardiola.
“He struggled a lot with many problems, and in a long career sometimes you have setbacks. It’s normal. But we’re really pleased he’s happy again, enjoying playing.”
The most high-profile graduate of the Manchester City academy is currently contracted with the club until the summer of 2027, having most recently extended his terms and improved an agreement back in October 2022.
