Rennes’ pursuit of Lecce centre-back Marin Pongracic (26) has hit a major stumbling block, according to a report this Wednesday from Le Parisien. The outlet understands that, despite a €15m agreement in principle between the two clubs and a medical being scheduled today, the Croatian international has rejected the opportunity to join the Brittany outfit. According to Gianluca di Marzio, Marin Pongracic has opted to stay in Serie A and sign for ACF Fiorentina, who are set to successfully hijack Rennes’ pursuit of the Croatian by matching Rennes’ bid to Lecce.
The Italian reporter understands that La Viola pounced to sign Marin Pongracic considering Serbian international centre-back Nikola Milenković is set to leave Fiorentina to join Premier League side Nottingham Forest. What’s more, the opportunity to remain in Italy reportedly appealed to Marin Pongracic. Besides, contrary to Rennes, ACF Fiorentina will play in Europe next season with the Tuscany club qualified for the Conference League courtesy of their 8th-place finish in the Italian first tier.
