Despite his own Ibrox allegiances, veteran boss is backing Martin O’Neill for more Celtic success…

Martin O’Neill is currently under fire due to recent poor results, including those back-to-back defeats by bitter rivals the Rangers. However the double winning Celtic manager has now been backed by a fellow veteran manager to steer Celtic through murky, turbulent waters and do what he does best, and that is bringing for success to the Hoops.

Self-confessed Ibrox follower and outspoken veteran boss Neil Warnock has thrown his weight behind the current Celtic gaffer, revealing that he’s a huge admirer of the Irishman’s character, something that will help him in his quest to turn things around.

The former Aberdeen interim manager told Daily Record: “The individuals who’ve had longevity in football management possess a special strength of character and that’s why I know Martin O’Neill will be alright today, tomorrow and for a while yet as Celtic boss.

Warnock continued: “I watched his post-match press conference after last Sunday’s Parkhead defeat to Rangers when he made his remark about having a think about things and it has been jumped on by some as a sign he’s had enough.

‌”He spoke in the moment and from the heart, I know how he must have felt as I’d have been the same. He’s just had one of the worst weeks he’s ever had. It’s hard to get over that.

“I want Martin to do what Martin wants to do – if he wants to stay then he should stay.”

Warnock also insisted that Martin’s reputation will never be tarnished, and quite correctly pointed out that the Hoops are still top of the table.

“‌His reputation will never be tarnished whatever happens,” added Warnock. “His record and commitment to Celtic has been fantastic so I think he’ll want to stay. That fire to achieve more success still burns within him he’s just that type.

“Is it such a desperate situation for him? Last time I looked, Celtic were top of the league but Scottish football is nuts. I thought the criticism was bad in Old Firm (sic). It’s 10 times worse at the Old Firm (sic). It’s special but mental.”
