FC Bayern lost 2-1 to a courageous FC Augsburg on matchday 19 of the Bundesliga. Despite Munich taking the lead in the first half, the visitors fought back to take three points from Munich

In temperatures just below freezing, FC Bayern lost a hard-fought game against FC Augsburg. After having to wait a long time for dangerous scoring chances in the first half, it took a set-piece to give them a 1-0 lead. Hiroki Ito scored with his head from a Michael Olise corner. Munich then became more dangerous, but without scoring again before half-time

This was also due to the courageous Augsburg visitors, who piled on the pressure, particularly at the start of the second half. This did not go unrewarded for long, with Arthur Chaves and Han-Noah Massengo turning the game in FCA’s favour and securing the relegation-threatened Augsburg side an important three points in their fight to avoid relegation

Ito puts Bayern ahead

A puzzle posed by the pre-match line-up was solved from the kick-off: Alphonso Davies started on the right, Hiroki Ito on the left. Luis Díaz had Bayern’s first chance in the 7th minute after a strong through-ball. He danced past his opponent on the right edge of the five-yard box and tried to shoot from an acute angle, but his shot was blocked. Munich then struggled for a long time

There were hardly any goalscoring chances worth mentioning, but it was a set-piece in the 23rd minute that gave Munich the lead. Michael Olise hit a corner from the right into the five-yard box, where Hiroki Ito rose high and headed the ball into the net to make it 1-0

Lennart Karl could have added to his tally shortly afterwards, but Díaz’s half-height cross was a little too long for the 17-year-old, who could only get his toe to the ball. Díaz himself then had another great chance, but failed to beat Augsburg keeper Finn Dahmen from an acute angle from the left half-space, who deflected the ball with a good portion of luck with his foot next to the goal instead of letting it through his legs into the goal as Díaz had intended

Shortly before half-time, Olise popped up again on the left wing and found Kane in the penalty area, but his shot went just wide of the post. Bayern largely controlled the game in the three minutes of stoppage time and took the 1-0 lead into the dressing room, but there was a brief scare on the break when Robin Fellhauer’s shot from around eight metres hit the crossbar

Augsburg turn the game around

The visitors actually got into the game a little better at the start of the second half. In the 49th minute, Alexis Claude-Maurice got a shot away in a central position, but Jonas Urbig was able to clear. Augsburg remained courageous after that and hardly allowed Bayern any chances. Instead, the Fuggerstädter even scored the equaliser. It was new signing Arthur Chaves who rose high after a corner, beat the somewhat unsure-looking Jonas Urbig and put the ball into the net with his back to make it 1:1

But that was not all: In the 81st minute, Dimitrios Giannoulis had far too much space on the left and was able to cross unchallenged into the penalty area, where the generally strong Han-Noah Massengo ran through and slotted the ball in with a direct shot to make it 1-2. Bayern then tried to keep at least a point in Munich, but remained too harmless. Even Olise’s crossbar strike virtually with the final whistle did nothing to change the first Bundesliga defeat of the season.
