RKC Waalwijk lost the local derby to newly promoted Willem II this weekend 3-0. Willem II could certainly have had more, It was the sides fifth defeat in a row and leaves them rock bottom of the Eredivisie. Remarkably, the side are shipping on average three goals a game, with only two scored. They are the only Eredivisie side yet to pick up a single point and have a goal difference of -13.

Clearly, the side are missing the likes of David Min, who scored 10 goals in 29 games for the side, and goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen, who joined newly promoted FC Groningen. They also lost the likes of Shawn Adewoye to Fortuna Sittard, replacing him with Roshon van Eijma from Top Oss in the Dutch second tier. Most of their business was free agents, with the players who departed also having done so for free, bar Min to Utrecht.

Waalwijk clearly don’t have the spending power of other clubs in the division, and this season that inability to bring in players that aren’t free agents may be about to cost them. Yes, it is only five games in, and there is still time, but head coach Henk Fraser will be wary of his own position. the head coach, appointed last season, did manage to drag the side away from relegation late on.

The side have some tough fixtures to come as well. Next week they host Sparta Rotterdam before Ajax make the trip south the following weekend. They then face FC Utrecht and FC Twente before a clash with local rivals NAC Breda on the 27th of October. They can ill afford not to have picked up any points by the time they face the newly promoted Breda.
