Five players who could join Tottenham this summer

Ange Postecoglou’s first season at Tottenham Hotspur was largely positive, though the North Londoners ran out of steam across the run-in to miss out on Champions League football.

Stage two of Postecoglou’s project begins in the transfer window and we’ve looked at five signings Spurs could make this summer.

Ivan Toney (Brentford)

Tottenham failed to sign a direct replacement for Harry Kane last summer and centre-forward is an area of focus for the summer.

Ivan Toney is an option for the North Londoners with the 28-year-old having made clear his intention to leave Brentford. Toney has entered the final 12 months of his deal with the Bees, who could be forced to cash in on their talisman for a reduced fee.

The England international has enhanced his reputation with some impactful performances from the bench at Euro 2024, including a crucial assist in the last-16 win over Slovakia and a trademark penalty in the shootout success against Switzerland. With a record of 36 goals and 11 assists from 83 top-flight appearances for Brentford, Toney is a Premier League-proven option who could hit the ground running for Spurs next season.

Jonathan David (Lille)

Jonathan David is another name on Tottenham’s list of number nine options, though Spurs are not alone in chasing a deal for the Lille forward. Chelsea and West Ham are admirers of David, who is free to leave France this summer after entering the final 12 months of his contract.

The 24-year-old has scored 84 goals in 182 appearances for Lille and trailed only Kylian Mbappe for goals in Ligue 1 last season. A prolific presence at international level, he has 27 goals for Canada, including a winner against Peru during Les Rouges’ run to the Copa America semi-finals.

With a rumoured asking price of just €25m (£21m) due to his contract situation, he could be a sensible signing.

Conor Gallagher (Chelsea)

Tottenham are long-term admirers of Chelsea midfielder Gallagher and are hoping to capitalise on his contract situation. Gallagher’s deal expires in 2025 and Chelsea are open to his exit to raise funds.

The England international’s preference is to remain with Chelsea after coming through the club’s ranks and captaining the side for much of last season, but the Blues’ stance on his future could persuade Gallagher that his future lies away from Stamford Bridge.

Gallagher’s infectious energy and desire to win the ball back high up the pitch seems ideally suited to Spurs’ style under Postecoglou, while a need for homegrown reinforcements adds to his appeal.

Eberechi Eze (Tottenham)

Eberechi Eze is another homegrown option Spurs have scouted and has a release clause of around £60m in his deal at Crystal Palace. The Eagles are reluctant to lose the midfielder after the sale of Michael Olise to Bayern Munich but could be powerless to prevent an exit.

Eze is the sort of footballer Spurs fans have long admired with an ability to get fans on their feet. An effortless ball-carrier, he scored 11 goals and laid on four assists in the Premier League last season to earn inclusion in the England squad for Euro 2024. His arrival could help ease the creative burden on James Maddison, whose form dipped across the second half of the campaign.

Jacob Ramsey (Aston Villa)

Tottenham have had an opening offer knocked back for Jacob Ramsey with Aston Villa turning down a proposal of £20m plus Giovani Lo Celso.

However, a revised approach has not been ruled out and the deal remains an option both parties will consider. Ramsey made just eight league starts in 2023-24 as he struggled for fitness and favour, following an exciting emergence that saw the 23-year-old win Aston Villa’s Young Player of the Season award in consecutive campaigns.

Villa boss Unai Emery previously coached Lo Celso at Paris Saint-Germain and Villarreal and could be open to a reunion as he looks to rebuild a midfield that has lost Douglas Luiz to Juventus.
