Five reasons to believe in a Barcelona comeback against Atletico Madrid

When you lose 4-0 in the first leg, the second leg usually feels like a formality – a slow walk to the exit. For most clubs, a four-goal deficit against an Atletico Madrid side managed by Diego Simeone is a death sentence.

And that is what Barcelona will be up against tomorrow night when they take on Los Rojiblancos in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

While the mountain in front of Hansi Flick’s men is steep, the air in Barcelona is thick with that familiar ‘remontada’ energy. The squad fully believes in the possibility of scaling that mountain and making it through to the final.

And here are five reasons why the possibility of a comeback is not just a fantasy.

1. The Flick factor

Hansi Flick does not do “passive” football. The German manager has built a career on high-octane, heavy-metal pressing that can overwhelm even the most disciplined defences.

Crucially, he knows how to handle Simeone. Flick holds a winning record against Atletico, boasting three wins, one draw, and two defeats since taking over at Barça. In addition, he also won one of the two matches he managed against El Cholo (1D) while at Bayern Munich.

Flick told the press earlier today that scoring “two goals in each half” is the aim – a pragmatic way of breaking down a miracle into manageable chunks.

A coach who believes in his plan gives players confidence. Barcelona will not walk into the second leg hoping. They will walk in with a clear tactical idea.

2. Comebacks are a part of Barça’s identity

If any club’s history justifies belief against huge odds, it’s Barcelona.

They can look back at 2013, when they overturned a 2-0 deficit against AC Milan with a legendary 4-0 win at Camp Nou. Even more famous is the 2017 remontada against PSG, where they recovered from a 4-0 first-leg thrashing to win 6-1 in the final seconds.

That “never-say-die” spirit has been a defining feature of the 2025/26 season as well. Under Flick, Barcelona have earned more points from losing positions than any other side in Europe’s top five leagues.

In the Champions League, they fought back to win after trailing against Eintracht Frankfurt, Slavia Prague, and Copenhagen. This team has effectively spent the entire season proving that a scoreboard deficit is merely a suggestion, not a final result.

3. An attack that can be deadly

You cannot dream of a comeback if you are struggling for goals, but Barca are creating chances by the horde and have been finding the net with scary ease in recent games.

Indeed, they bagged seven goals in their last two outings, including a dominant 4-1 win over Villarreal where Lamine Yamal looked practically untouchable on his way to a hat-trick.

In 100 games that Flick has managed, Barcelona have scored four or more goals in as many as 29 matches – twice against Atletico Madrid. Moreover, they have won 12 matches by a margin of four goals or more.

Whether through quick combinations, wide play, or runs into the box, Barcelona have the personnel to put multiple goals on the board in one night.

4. Atletico’s shaky foundations

The Atletico Madrid of old was a steel vault, but this season’s version is much more… human. Simeone’s side has been uncharacteristically inconsistent, oscillating between masterclasses and total collapses.

Just last month, they were dismantled 3-0 by Rayo Vallecano, and they have already suffered shock European results – losing to Bodø/Glimt, drawing against the likes of Galatasaray and Club Brugge.

While they were clinical in the first leg, Atleti’s away record in 2026 shows a team that can be rattled.

If Barca can put them under early pressure and get the crowd involved at the Spotify Camp Nou – where they hold a perfect winning record this season – there is a high chance the cracks in Simeone’s defence will widen under the heat of the lights.

5. The precedent is there

If anyone says scoring four against Atletico is impossible, you only have to look back to the Copa del Rey semi-final last season. In a game that went down as an all-time classic, Barcelona proved they could dismantle Simeone’s backline in record time.

Despite a nightmare start that saw them trail 2-0 within just six minutes, the Blaugrana unleashed a historic blitz that saw them score four unanswered goals in the space of 55 minutes.

Pedri sparked the recovery in the 19th minute, followed immediately by a Pau Cubarsi header just two minutes later. Inigo Martinez completed the turnaround shortly before the break, and Robert Lewandowski capped off the surge in the 74th minute to make it 4-2.

While that specific match eventually ended in a chaotic 4-4 draw, it serves as the ultimate proof of concept.

It was not a fluke, either. Later that season in La Liga, Barca travelled to the Metropolitano and walked away with a 2-4 victory after being two goals down until the 70th minute.

Barcelona already have the blueprint; now they just need to execute it, while keeping the back door shut.
