Five suggestions to help Inter Miami improve their defence

Inter Miami’s 18-year-old centre back Fricio Caicedo could see more minutes with veteran Micael sidelined by an ankle injury. The Herons need greater defensive balance to keep their MLS Cup defence alive.

According to interheron.com, balance is essential. Inter Miami and FC Cincinnati have 46 goals each in 19 MLS matches in 2026, while Cincinnati have conceded 45 and Miami 36. Since the World Cup break, seven games including three Leagues Cup dates read 14 for and 14 against.

First, add pace and width. With attacks funnelled through Telasco Segovia, Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, all central, turnovers trigger counters. With Allende, Berterame and Silvetti out, Hoyos should use Lovend's Delinois, Dániel Pintér or Preston Plambeck, and set roles so Bright screens while Casemiro and Rodrigo De Paul link play.

Next, trust Noah Allen and Ian Fray. New signings at full back and centre back have arrived in successive seasons, yet the homegrowns reclaim places. Facundo Mura has underwhelmed and Sergio Reguilón inconsistent, while Allen and Fray are reliably solid.

Play Caicedo. The 18-year-old has the tools and needs minutes to refine them, and with Micael out, maybe even when he returns, Caicedo is the most intimidating presence in the back line.

Finally, give Dayne St Clair another shot. The 2025 Goalkeeper of the Year struggled with Miami’s style early and lost the shirt to Rocco Ríos Novo. Novo has made two soft errors. Both keepers are OK, but ambition demands more, and St Clair deserves the chance to grow.
