Five things we learnt from Brentford vs Ipswich

Brentford beat Ipswich in a 4-3 thriller at the G-Tech Stadium, with both sides squandering leads in the game.

The Bees were buzzing but the Tractor Boys will be fearing the worst. Kieran McKenna’s side remain winless in the league, and will rue missing the chance to win the game having been 2-0 up at one point.

Ipswich let their lead slip in relegation-like fashion

To be 2-0 up in a Premier League game is no mean feat, but to squander the lead and end up losing 4-3 is disappointing. Ipswich are one of four teams yet to win a league game and if they cannot hold onto a lead and maintain a good performance for more than 25 minutes, they will struggle to win many this season. Kieran McKenna will have to go back to the drawing board.

Harry Carke had a debut to forget

This was Harry Clarke’s full Premier League debut and he gave away a penalty, scored an own goal and got sent off. Debuts don’t come much worse than this, fair to say it was a rude awakening to Premier League football for the 23 year old defender, who will now unfortunately have a few weeks to reflect on the game before he can make amends.

Yoanne Wissa continues his strong start to the season

Wissa has had a positive first few games and today notched his 4th Premier League goal this campaign. He also had a strong case to claim the goal that eventually went down as a Harry Clarke own goal. The 28 year old’s link-up with Bryan Mbuemo is constantly improving and with the duo, Brentford have barely missed Ivan Toney.

George Hirst was an able replacement for Liam Delap

Delap has had a brilliant season so far, scoring five goals in the league. It was therefore a surprise when he was named on the bench for this game. But Hirst was a more than capable replacement and got a goal and assist in the first 32 minutes. His goal was a lovely dinked finish that left Mark Flekken with no chance.

Mark Flekken struggled playing out from the back

Like many managers, Thomas Franks wants his team, and goalkeeper, to play out from the back. But on multiple occasions this season, Flekken has not looked comfortable doing so. In this game he was caught out a few times and almost conceded a goal from it. It was 2-0 to Ipswich at the time and that could have completely ended the game for the Bees.
