Spain await after eliminating France in the other semi. The final is on Sunday at 16:00 in New Jersey, United States. Palmeiras congratulated López on social media.

Nine other Palmeiras players have reached a World Cup final, all with Brazil. They are Mazzola in 1958, Djalma Santos, Zequinha and Vavá in 1962, Emerson Leão and Baldocchi in 1970, Zinho and Mazinho in 1994, and Marcos in 2002.

López is the first since 2002 to achieve the feat. Starters among those included Djalma Santos and Vavá in 1962, Zinho and Mazinho in 1994, and Marcos in 2002.

A squad player for Argentina, he has featured for only 18 minutes across two matches at this World Cup, but he did set up Julian Álvarez’s extra-time goal against Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
