Flaco López in form, set for Argentina debut at Libertadores venue

In good form at Palmeiras, the forward Flaco López has been called up to the Argentine National Team for the first time and may debut this Thursday (4) in Argentina's match against Venezuela at the Monumental de Núñez in Buenos Aires, for the World Cup Qualifiers.

Already secured at the top of the competition and confirmed for the 2026 World Cup, Argentina will also face Ecuador at the Monumental de Guayaquil next Tuesday (9).

This is the first time the forward from Palmeiras has been called up to Argentina's main national team. Alongside him, Lionel Messi from Inter Miami, Lautaro Martínez from Inter Milan, Julián Álvarez from Atlético de Madrid, Nico González from Juventus, and Mastantuono from Real Madrid are some of the other offensive options.

Libertadores Preview

The match at the Monumental de Nuñez, home of River Plate, for the national team is a preview of what the striker will experience with Palmeiras in the Libertadores. The number 42 will return to the stadium days later for Palmeiras and River Plate, in the quarter-finals of the continental competition. The duel takes place on September 17 at 9:30 PM (Brasília time). In an interview with TV Palmeiras, he spoke about the call-up.

“Not even in my best dreams did I imagine this, but life is like that, it keeps surprising you and I have to be prepared for all the challenges that come my way. I am very happy, it's a spectacular moment for the national team and I didn't expect to have the opportunity, but today it has come. I will defend the colors of my country and I think it's the biggest dream I have in football, so I am very happy to achieve it.”

The name of the 24-year-old athlete is constantly linked to the Argentine club. In July, on social media, news circulated in recent days that River would be intensifying talks to sign the forward. In an interview in the mixed zone before the match against Chelsea, for the Club World Cup, the player reinforced his focus on Verdão and said he had not been approached.

“I don't know anything at all. I am happy here, tomorrow we have a very important game, it's a very important championship for us. I didn't have the pleasure of playing with Gallardo (River Plate's coach), we can never close doors, we don't know what tomorrow holds, but today I am very happy here. I haven't heard anything.”

Flaco has 17 goals and three assists this season in 44 matches. He has been at Palmeiras since 2022 and had his most prolific year in 2024 with 22 goals and seven assists in 61 games.
