Flaco López on Lionel Messi: ‘He asked me loads about Palmeiras’

Flaco López is experiencing his best moment since joining Palmeiras. As a reflection of his good form, he was called up for the first time to represent the Argentine national team in August and, in September, he debuted as a starter alongside Lionel Messi in the current world champion team.

In an interview with TyC Sports, the Argentine forward spoke about his relationship with Messi during the call-ups for Argentina.

“I haven't asked for a photo with him yet. We'll see if it happens one day. In the last call-up, I talked a lot more with him, Messi asked me a lot about Palmeiras.”

On the field, he played for 63 minutes and provided the assist for the team's third goal, which defeated Puerto Rico 6-0 in the United States, in a friendly match.

Top scorer for Palmeiras in 2025, Flaco López has scored 23 goals this season. He also has six assists, totaling 29 direct goal involvements. At 24 years old, the Argentine forward has become one of Palmeiras' key players and dreams of securing a spot in Lionel Scaloni's squad for the next World Cup.

“It's a goal I have, I work every day to achieve it and try to give my best here at Palmeiras. I think that by doing my job, I'll already be a good problem for the coach,” said López, with his eyes set on 2026.

“I can offer other qualities, and that plays in my favor. I always try to maintain a high level and improve every day. Lautaro and Julián are the best number 9s in the world.”

On the other hand, López confirmed that he was close to playing for Boca Juniors and River Plate, although his departure from Brazil never materialized:

I was very close to both, but I was much closer to River Plate last year. They talked to the club, but it's hard to leave a place where you are so loved like here. Palmeiras never thought of loaning me out; they always trusted me and worked to make me a national team player, and now it's happening.
