Palmeiras striker Flaco López scored his first goal for Argentina in a September-October international window that also serves as a farewell to Lionel Messi, with Lionel Scaloni overseeing a squad refresh.
According to Nosso Palestra, Agustín Giay started at right-back. There is an expectation he will receive many chances in the new cycle, and he is in strong club form.
López, Palmeiras’ leading scorer this season, broke his international duck in the 86th minute. At the World Cup, despite being a substitute, he supplied an assist. He also drew notice as the only player to watch Spain’s title celebrations in the United States in July.
Argentina still face Burkina Faso and Benin during this window.
Palmeiras have eight players away on international duty. Ramón Sosa, Maurício and Gustavo Gómez are with Paraguay, Jhon Arias with Colombia, Piquerez and Emiliano with Uruguay, and Giay and López with Argentina.
This window is longer than usual, with fixtures from late September into early October, leaving the coaching staff without key personnel for a little more than two weeks. The pause will be used for physical and mental recovery, although working without the full group is difficult.
