Flamengo have nine players at the World Cup across four national teams, and their goals could push the club up the Brazilian ranking for World Cup scorers. According to Coluna Do Fla, the club trail Vasco and Botafogo in that list.

The nine are Danilo, Léo Pereira, Alex Sandro and Lucas Paqueta for Brazil, Arrascaeta, De La Cruz and Varela for Uruguay, Jorge Carrascal for Colombia, and Gonzalo Plata for Ecuador.

Both leaders also have representatives at the tournament, so Flamengo will need rivals to stay quiet. Andrés Gómez features for Vasco da Gama, while Botafogo are represented by Danilo Santos of Brazil. Santos’ hopes rest on Neymar narrowing the gap.

The current top eight reads: Vasco 29, Botafogo 28, Flamengo 21, Santos 17, Corinthians 13, Fluminense 12, Palmeiras 10 and São Paulo 10.

Leônidas da Silva is Flamengo’s leading World Cup marksman with seven in 1938, with Zico next on five. Arrascaeta, Sócrates and Moderato have two each, while Maestro Junior, Paolo Guerrero and Zagallo have one apiece.

Brazil open on Saturday 13 against Morocco at 19:00 Brasília time, with Ecuador facing Ivory Coast on Sunday 14 at 20:00. On Monday 15, Uruguay meet Saudi Arabia at 19:00 without the injured Arrascaeta, before Colombia play Uzbekistan on Wednesday 17 at 23:00.
