Flamengo’s injury woes are looking a little more optimistic this week as defender Gustavo Henrique returned to training after missing his team’s last 14 matches.
Henrique has been dealing with both a knee and a thigh problem since February, but returned to team training on Thursday as Flamengo prepare for another edition of the Fla-Flu derby.
While his return was met with good spirits from his teammates, Henrique is unlikely to feature on Sunday against Fluminense in an effort not to rush him back too quickly from recovery.
Henrique has been a consistent figure in the Flamengo backline over the last two years, making 70 appearances across all competitions in 2020 and 2021, scoring six goals.
While he has yet to feature under new manager Paulo Sousa, his return would be a welcome boost for a squad facing something of a consistent injury problem during the coach’s first spell in charge.
Flamengo will be hoping for a strong showing against Fluminense on Sunday, having been defeated by their rivals 3-1 on aggregate in the 2022 Campeonato Carioca final.
