Arrascaeta has a grade two right-calf injury that almost saw him cut from Uruguay’s World Cup squad, alerting Flamengo. According to Globo.com, the club feel more at ease with physio Laniyan Neves embedded with Uruguay.
Neves has been called into the Uruguayan backroom for the tournament. He treats Arrascaeta daily at the club and privately, and the player had long sought his involvement, a request only now accepted.
Flamengo kept in contact through qualifiers and friendlies to monitor workloads, notably the strict load management for Arrascaeta and De la Cruz. The physio’s presence with national teams is not new, he has been drafted in before for specific care.
When releasing players, Flamengo sent full reports on each footballer’s condition. Those documents did not bind national teams to Flamengo’s daily programmes and protocols, and Neves’s arrival with Uruguay will help in that regard.
Uruguay’s federation have not set a return date, with recovery estimated at around three weeks. He has not been cut, and the aim is to recover him in time for the competition.
Neves was promoted to the first team in 2020 after starting as an academy intern. He was dismissed last year, then reinstated soon after at the request of players and staff.
In total, Flamengo have 11 professionals at the World Cup. Beyond Neves, Léo Nannetti is assisting Brazil’s training sessions and there are nine call-ups, Danilo, Alex Sandro, Paquetá, Léo Pereira, Carrascal, Plata, Arrascaeta, Varela and De la Cruz.
