Arrascaeta left the World Cup without playing, having been named on the bench for the 1-0 defeat by Spain. His inclusion among the substitutes buoyed Flamengo, who now await his return to continue the final stage of his recovery.

According to Globo.com, although listed as an option, the No 10 was not yet in condition to play, so Marcelo Bielsa did not use him. There had been hope he might feature in a knockout tie, but Uruguay exited the groups with two points.

He is in the final phase of recovery from a right calf injury suffered on the eve of the tournament. He has moved beyond physiotherapy and has joined some group work in a transition phase.

Flamengo expect him to be fully fit when matches resume on 22 July away to Chapecoense. Given a long spell without playing, after a fractured clavicle, his return could be managed gradually.

Rehabilitation has been coordinated with Laniyan Neves, a club physiotherapist seconded to Uruguay for the World Cup who also looks after Arrascaeta day to day outside the club. He monitored and aligned the work, so Flamengo know precisely what has been done, while also following Varela and De la Cruz.

Arrascaeta, Varela and De la Cruz will have 10 days of holiday and are likely to miss the training period and games in Portugal. They are expected to report back at Ninho do Urubu to start preparations, though they could return to the training centre earlier.
