As the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup group stage nears its close, Los Angeles FC and Flamengo prepare to meet in Orlando, each with very different motivations. Flamengo have already guaranteed first place in Group D following back-to-back wins over ES Tunis and Chelsea, while LAFC enter this contest eliminated after two defeats, still seeking their tournament's first goal.
Flamengo arrive in superb form, unbeaten in their last eight matches across all competitions, including a convincing victory over Chelsea and a dominant run atop Brazil’s Serie A. Their tactical identity under Filipe Luís remains centered on a high press and possession-heavy approach, enabling creators like Giorgian De Arrascaeta—who has delivered nine goals and four assists in just nine matches—to drive the attack.
LAFC, by contrast, have struggled to make their mark at this step up in competition. The last two Club World Cup outings saw them blanked by both Chelsea and ES Tunis, with Denis Bouanga and Olivier Giroud unable to translate domestic productivity into international impact. The squad has experienced significant turnover in 2025, with a mix of MLS veterans and recent international arrivals still seeking chemistry.
Flamengo utilize a proactive, high defensive line, pressing opponents higher up the field than any club globally. This tactical discipline has forced errors from even top-tier opposition, as witnessed in their win over Chelsea. The likely lineup includes a blend of experience (Danilo, Alex Sandro, Pulgar) and attacking flair (De Arrascaeta, Pedro, Luiz Araújo), although with group qualification already secured, some squad rotation is expected.
LAFC’s approach under Steven Cherundolo has focused on a balanced 4-3-3, with Hugo Lloris and Giroud supplying leadership. However, a lack of cutting edge in front of goal—and issues adapting to the pace and organization of international opposition—have hampered their efforts. Their midfield, anchored by Mark Delgado, has struggled to assert control, especially under sustained pressure.
Although the result will not alter the group standings, both teams have reasons to perform. Flamengo are chasing a third consecutive group victory, which, alongside momentum, carries a significant financial bonus. LAFC, playing on home soil, aim to salvage pride and avoid finishing their tournament campaign goalless.
The backdrop also includes notably low tournament attendance in the US, contrasting with strong support for Flamengo, whose matches have drawn the largest crowds among South American sides. There’s also speculation that Flamengo’s transfer dealings and financial power—recently setting revenue records—will influence their rotation and focus as the tournament progresses.
Given Flamengo’s current form, tactical cohesion, and squad depth—even with likely changes to rest starters—they have the upper hand. LAFC’s attacking struggles are difficult to overlook, especially as they have yet to find the net in the competition. Flamengo’s pressing style should generate opportunities, and their attacking midfield is well-placed to capitalize.
Predicted Score: Los Angeles FC 0 - 2 Flamengo
