Flamengo have submitted a request to the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan) for their supporters to be listed as Brazil’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, a further step towards United Nations recognition, according to Coluna Do Fla.
The document was delivered by club great Zico to Iphan president Leandro Grass and the institute’s director of Intangible Heritage, Deyvesson Gusmão, during a visit to Flamengo’s Historic Heritage collection in Gávea. The club is continuing to gather fan signatures to build support.
In a new message to supporters, Zico characterised Flamengo as a borderless nation of 45 million who share the same language and passion and recognise one another anywhere in the world.
Leandro Grass said the submission opens an important discussion about recognising cultural elements linked to football in Brazil. He described the proposal to register the Nação Rubro-Negra as intangible heritage as an innovative possibility within national heritage policy.
The Iphan move runs alongside a public petition launched last year seeking recognition at the United Nations. The petition has about 600,000 signatures and the target is now 1 million, with backing recorded at peticao.flamengo.com.br.
