A lacklustre first half sprung to life in its last five minutes as Flamengo came close with two headers.
Thiaguinho’s corner was dealt with at the near post but he got a second bite at the cherry, sending an inviting curling cross towards the six-yard area but Matheus França’s glancing header went narrowly wide.
Two minutes later an unmarked Yuri de Oliveira rose to meet the ball but could only direct his header harmlessly into the arms of Felipe Avelino in the Volta Redonda net.
The second half started with a little more intent from both sides. Volta striker Lelê forced a fingertip save from Matheus Cunha and at the other end, André met an inviting cross but couldn’t get enough on his header to direct it on goal.
Both teams had opportunities to take the three points in the final minutes of the game.
Emulating the previously missed opportunities by the Mengão, Gabriel Noga’s header in the first minute of added time was lacking clear contact, flying harmlessly wide.
Volta, who had been a threat on the counterattack all game, quickly found themselves at the other end. Pedrinho’s inswinging corner heading straight in but for the quick movement of the young Brazilian keeper, palming the ball away at his near post.
Flamengo next face Boavista on Wednesday and Volta Redonda travel to Bangu Atlético Clube.
