Flamengo are negotiating the sale of 20-year-old defender Iago to Orlando City. According to Globo.com, the centre-back has featured in the club’s first three Campeonato Carioca matches this year.
His contract runs only until the end of the year, and while a renewal was offered recently, limited first-team chances have weighed on his decision. After ageing out of the under-20s, he was integrated into Filipe Luís’s side in mid-2025, but opportunities remained scarce.
Talks have accelerated in recent days, and Flamengo’s football department are awaiting approval from president Bap to conclude the deal. The president had been travelling and will meet José Boto. The proposal arrived last week.
He has featured for youth national teams and drew interest from clubs in Brazil and abroad, with enquiries from Europe and Saudi Arabia.
Captain of the group that won the Libertadores and the Mundial at youth level, Iago scored the equaliser in the final against Barcelona at the Maracanã. He also found the net in this year’s Carioca opener.
He joined Flamengo’s under-17s in 2021 after emerging at Volta Redonda, the opponents who may have marked his farewell. Iago has made only four senior appearances.
