Besides becoming the greatest Brazilian champion of the Libertadores by defeating Palmeiras 1-0 last Saturday at the Monumental de Lima in Peru, Flamengo also secured a millionaire prize. The Rubro-Negro collected 24 million dollars (about R$ 129.37 million) with the continental tetracampeonato.

This is the prize paid by Conmebol to the club champion of the Libertadores. Before the match started, Flamengo had already secured 8.25 million dollars (about R$ 44.47 million, at the current exchange rate). Thus, the victorious campaign yielded 32.25 million dollars (R$ 173.75 million).

On the other hand, Palmeiras pocketed seven million dollars (R$ 37.71 million) with the runner-up position. Thus, the total amount accumulated throughout Verdão's campaign was 15.25 million dollars (R$ 82.22 million).

To determine the amount each team will receive for their performance, Conmebol sets a fixed value for each advanced stage in the Libertadores. Additionally, there is also a bonus for victory in the group stage.

Now, with four Libertadores trophies, Flamengo surpasses the São Paulo teams Palmeiras, Santos, and São Paulo, as well as the team from Rio Grande do Sul, Grêmio, who have three titles. Besides winning the continental tournament this year, the Rubro-Negro also claimed the trophy in 1981, 2019, and 2022.

More celebrations to come?

Despite still celebrating the Libertadores title, Flamengo could complete the triple crown this season. If they beat Ceará this Wednesday at 9:30 PM (Brasília time), the Rubro-Negro will lift the Brazilian Championship trophy for the eighth time in their history.

Just like in the Libertadores, Palmeiras is competing with Flamengo for the national title, but faces an unlikely scenario. Currently in second place with 70 points, five behind the Rubro-Negro, Verdão needs to win the last two rounds against Atlético-MG and Ceará, and hope for Flamengo to slip against the team from Ceará and Mirassol to win the Brasileirão.
