Flamengo were dealt a major setback in the 1-1 draw at Estudiantes, as Arrascaeta fractured his collarbone in the first half. According to Globo.com, he could be sidelined until the World Cup and the club have opted for surgery.

The playmaker asked to come off after a foul hurt his right shoulder, was taken to a nearby hospital for tests, then returned to the Jorge Luis Hirschi to depart with the squad.

Leonardo Jardim must now recalibrate without his main creator. For Sunday’s clássico against Vasco at the Maracanã at 16:00, he will also be without Carrascal and Paquetá, then visits Independiente Medellín in Colombia at 21:30 on Thursday.

Carrascal serves a one-match suspension in the league, part of a four-game ban, two for a Supercopa red and two from the Fla-Flu. Paquetá is in physiotherapy for oedema in his left thigh tendon, needs more time and is a doubt even for the next Libertadores round.

Jardim has tested a front four, used against Vitória, though it faltered in the Copa do Brasil and required Arrascaeta after the interval. He could instead go with three midfielders, a holder plus De la Cruz and Saúl, while Luiz Araújo, Bruno Henrique and Everton Cebolinha have trained as No 10s and could drop deeper.

Assistant José Barros said they prepare game by game, analysing opposition, competition and venue, and felt the chosen XI responded well. He added it is satisfying to have a squad that adapts to different contexts.
