Flamengo sack head coach Filipe Luís despite 8-0 win

Flamengo announced that Filipe Luís is no longer the team's coach. The coach was informed of the board's decision after giving a press conference following the 8-0 victory over Madureira, a score that secured qualification for the final of the Campeonato Carioca

Filipe Luís leaves Flamengo with 63 wins, 22 draws, and 15 losses in his 100 matches in charge of the club. He leaves the position trailing only Jorge Jesus and Flávio Costa in terms of achievements, with five titles: the Copa do Brasil in 2024, the Supercopa do Brasil, Carioca, Brasileiro, and Libertadores in 2025.

The executive director of football, José Boto, was responsible for informing the coach of his departure, in a meeting that lasted less than half an hour at Maracanã. Surprised, Filipe Luís was unable to even say goodbye to the squad, as the players had already left the stadium by the time the meeting ended.

Insiders say that the decision came from the club's president, Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap, who wanted a change in leadership immediately after the loss of the Recopa Sul-Americana title last Thursday. Flamengo's start to the season is atypical for the club, which also lost the Supercopa do Brasil to Corinthians, and has already suffered five defeats in 12 matches with the main team.

Portuguese Coach in the Sights

The Flamengo board plans to have a new coach in charge for the match against Fluminense in the final of the Campeonato Carioca, scheduled for Sunday. The strongest candidate at the moment is Leonardo Jardim, who led Cruzeiro to third place in the Brasileirão and the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil.

Jardim left the Minas Gerais team at the end of the year, citing personal issues that encouraged him to try to preserve his physical and mental health after a taxing year, dealing with work and his wife's health problems. In total, he managed 55 matches as coach of Cruzeiro, with 26 wins, 18 draws, and 11 losses.

Flamengo's Statement on the Dismissal:

"Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that, as of this Tuesday, Filipe Luís will no longer be the head coach of the professional team. Also leaving the club are Ivan Palanco (assistant coach) and Diogo Linhares (fitness coach).

"Flamengo thanks the former player and coach Filipe Luís for everything that has been achieved and shared on this journey. The club wishes him success and good luck in the continuation of his professional career."
