Flamengo closed the first international window of 2026 with three signings and a club-record outlay of R$ 334 million. Goalkeeper Andrew, centre-back Vitão and midfielder Lucas Paquetá all arrived.
According to Globo.com, Matheus Cunha departed at contract end for Cruzeiro, so Andrew was signed from Gil Vicente for 1.5 million euros.
After shortages at centre-back in 2025, Flamengo moved for Vitão from Internacional for 10 million euros, including forgiveness of a 4.5 million euro Thiago Maia debt.
The club then broke the Brazilian transfer record to bring Lucas Paquetá from West Ham for 42 million euros. Flamengo viewed it as a market opportunity, with the player keen to return, and value his versatility.
That spend squeezed the budget and complicated the pursuit of a centre-forward. Offers went in for Kaio Jorge and talks began with Taty Castellanos and Richarlison, who did not want to move to Brazil now.
Scouting targeted established options, given the squad’s value, yet the hierarchy still see an imbalance, sparking a minor internal crisis after a request from Filipe Luís was not met by sporting director José Boto. With the coach dismissed this week, plans will be revisited with new manager Leonardo Jardim, including whether to sign a centre-forward.
