The Rubro-Negro have been struggling on the pitch since winning the Copa Libertadores, and they continued in that vein by suffering a second consecutive league defeat.

The visitors enjoyed 68% possession across 90 minutes, with 13 shots compared to nine for the hosts. However, they failed to find their scoring touch without the likes of Gabriel Barbosa and Pedro involved after manager Dorival Júnior had selected a largely second-string starting XI.

A mistake allowed Coritiba to take things into their own hands despite Flamengo goalkeeper Hugo Souza making multiple saves on the night to keep the game scoreless.

Veteran midfielder Diego Ribas, who on Saturday had announced his plan to retire at the end of the season, committed a foul inside his own penalty area. That allowed Alef Manga to score from the spot just before the hour mark.

Flqmengo tried to use their bench to rescue at least a point, but none of the substitutes introduced managed to create anything worthwhile.

The result means the Mengão now lie fifth in the Brasileirão table with two games to go, while Coritiba ease their relegation worries by moving up to 15th.
