The upcoming Fifa World Cup in Qatar is proving a headache for many top clubs across the globe, and Flamengo are not unaffected by the preparations.
Both Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Guillermo Varela have been called up for Uruguay’s final two friendlies before the tournament kicks off in late November.
The Rubro-Negro duo are included in an extended 42-man squad for La Celeste friendlies against Iran and Canada on 23 and 27 September respectively.
Both games will take place in the Austrian capital of Vienna.
On the bright side for the Mengão, Uruguay’s games fall during an unusually fallow period in the their fixture list.
Fla will face Fluminense in a league derby on 18 September but then don’t play again in the Brasileirão for 10 days.
De Arrascaeta and Varela could conceivably make it back in time to play against Fortaleza on 28 September, but we’re sure the club’s sports science department would argue fervently against that scenario.
Before all that, however, Flamengo must focus on Sunday’s home clash with Ceará.
