Flamengo have been ranked the most valuable squad in the Americas by the CIES Football Observatory, and build-up in Ecuador has cast the quarter-final against Independiente del Valle as a David and Goliath contest.

Expresso Ecuador reports that Independiente del Valle’s squad is valued at around 41 million euros, roughly R$ 221 million. The first leg is on Thursday 10 at 21:30 Brasília time at Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa in Quito, with ESPN on subscription TV and Disney via streaming.

CIES values Flamengo at 225 million euros, about R$ 1.3 billion, placing the club 50th worldwide and first across the Americas. Liverpool lead the global list at 1.2 billion euros, around R$ 7.2 billion. The study weighs age, performance, positions and career projection.

Behind Flamengo, Palmeiras, River Plate, Cruzeiro and Botafogo are the other representatives from the Americas in the CIES ranking. Independiente del Valle do not appear among the 71 teams assessed.

The financial gap is stark, but once the whistle goes it is 11 against 11, and Quito’s altitude is also a factor.
