Miguel Rondelli has left Cusco for Melgar, leaving Flamengo’s 2026 Libertadores Group A opponent without a head coach days before the opener.

According to Coluna Do Fla, Melgar paid the Argentine’s release clause to free him from a contract running until 2028, and Rondelli accepted their offer. He is credited with helping Cusco qualify for this year’s group stage.

The Peruvian club, who play at 3,000 metres, are racing to appoint a replacement. Rondelli now turns his focus to the Torneo Clausura with Melgar.

Cusco are debutants in the Libertadores under their current name. The club previously competed as Real Garcilaso, who reached the quarter-finals, before a 2019 name change honouring the city.

Flamengo continue under Leonardo Jardim, with the Portuguese coach only five games into his tenure. The sides are set to meet in Peru on eight April at 21:30 Brasília time.
