Brazil face Norway in the last 16 on Sunday 5 July, a tie that will reunite Flamengo defender Danilo with Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard, former Real Madrid colleagues.
According to Coluna Do Fla, the pair trained together at Madrid but never played an official match alongside each other because of a seven-year age gap. Danilo was with Real from mid-2015 to mid-2017, while Odegaard was in the academy setup.
They did share a pitch in the 2016 International Champions Cup, when Danilo scored in the final against Bayern Munich and Odegaard came on after 61 minutes.
Sunday’s World Cup meeting will be their first reunion since those Madrid days, with their club careers yet to intersect.
After leaving Spain, Danilo joined Manchester City in 2017 and moved to Juventus in 2019, spending six seasons in Italy, his longest spell in Europe.
Out of contract with Juventus, he signed for Flamengo in January 2025 and helped deliver one of the club’s most successful years. He scored in the Libertadores final against Palmeiras and was dubbed “herói do tetra”.
His Flamengo deal runs until the end of this year, so he can sign a pre-contract to leave at season’s end, although a renewal remains possible.
