Flick facing a big selection dilemma in Barcelona midfield ahead of Newcastle clash

Although the 2025/26 edition of the UEFA Champions League kicks off tonight, Barcelona won’t start their campaign until Thursday, when they take on Newcastle United.

That means the Catalans have decent enough time to prepare for their trip to St James’ Park. The club are coming on the back of a resounding 6-0 victory over Valencia, but that win has posed more questions than solving them.

Flick’s big selection dilemma in midfield

As reported by SPORT, one of Hansi Flick’s biggest selection dilemmas heading into the Newcastle United tie will be the midfield.

The German remains undecided between Marc Casado and Frenkie de Jong in Barcelona’s double-pivot alongside Pedri.

It must be noted that Casado was one of the star performers for Barcelona in their 6-0 win over Valencia, controlling the midfield with sheer precision and control.

At the same time, though, De Jong could be back in contention after recovering from a minor injury incurred during the international break.

While the Dutchman is unquestionably a more complete midfielder, he has endured a slow start to the new season, notably missing the Levante game due to personal reasons, while not featuring in Barcelona’s squad against Valencia due to injury.

But as the Catalans gear up for the Newcastle tie, De Jong could return as an option for coach Flick.

De Jong’s experience and leadership could be integral in helping Barcelona retain control of the game, especially against a Newcastle United side that boasts significant firepower.

However, his fitness concern, coupled with Casado’s performance against Valencia, means Flick has a decision to make this midweek.
