Sunderland are close to agreeing a new long-term contract with highly rated goalkeeper Matty Young, in a move that would secure a leading academy prospect under sporting director Florent Ghisolfi.
Sunderland Echo understands that talks are at an advanced stage and most key terms have been verbally agreed. The proposed deal would run for four years with an option of a further 12 months. It is not complete and nothing is done until it is formally signed.
Young, 19, has been at the club since the age of seven and signed his first professional contract in November 2023. He shone on loan at Darlington in National League North, winning their young player of the season, then joined Salford City in summer 2024 and returned in 2025. He has made 75 league appearances for Salford across two seasons, 89 senior games in all competitions.
That senior exposure at a young age has strengthened Sunderland’s belief in his long-term potential. He has also represented England at under-19, under-20 and under-21 level.
Young is not expected to return to Salford for a third loan next season. The view is that a new environment is now needed, with a bigger club, fanbase and stadium seen as the logical next step. Plymouth Argyle are understood to be keen, while Cardiff City and MK Dons have also been linked, and any move will be chosen to ensure regular football at a testing level.
Robin Roefs has established himself as Sunderland’s number one, while Anthony Patterson faces a major decision over his future amid outside interest. Melker Ellborg is also part of the senior group.
Young’s expected new deal underlines Sunderland’s longer-term planning. While another loan looks likely in the short term, the club see him as a potential first-team figure in the years ahead.
