Sunderland are working to strengthen this summer, and according to Sunderland Echo, Florent Ghisolfi is advancing targets and groundwork while the first signing is awaited.
They start pre-season two full backs light after Dennis Cirkin’s exit and Lutsharel Geertruida’s loan expiry. Sunderland remain keen on a permanent Geertruida, but with the option lapsed a new, lower fee is sought and he is likely to weigh options after the World Cup.
Interest in Óscar Mingueza ended when he joined Crystal Palace, but his profile is telling, a right back who can play across defence and step into midfield. Even so, another specialist is required.
Omar Alderete’s impact and workload underline the need for extra centre-back cover, despite Luke O’Nien’s strong finish. Jhon Lucumí has been mentioned again with one year left at Bologna, while Tarik Muharemović of Sassuolo and Parma’s Mariano Troilo have been linked, both aged 23.
Out wide, Sunderland want two natural wingers after Bertrand Traoré’s departure, even though Hume filled in well. They have an interest in Matías Soulé, whom Ghisolfi initially took to AS Roma, a one-v-one threat who can operate infield and is likely to command a significant fee.
Eliezer Mayenda’s sale to Stade Rennais means further attacking cover may be needed, possibly a right-sided forward who can act as a second striker. If interest in Wilson Isidor does progress, though there have been no indications so far, Sunderland would need to return to the market.
