Florian Maurice has returned to work at Nice after being caught up in violent scenes 10 days ago, intent on moving forward even as the episode leaves a mark.

According to L'Équipe, the sporting director was confronted and struck by supporters when the team returned from the 1-3 defeat at Lorient on 30 November, amid around 400 fans critical of his recent transfer window. Recent weeks had brought fierce criticism of his recruitment, this time the blows were physical.

Media-shy at the best of times, Maurice declined to comment, while president Fabrice Bocquet said his focus was on what comes next. Players sought to include his name in their act of solidarity by printing those targeted on their shirts, but he refused, so only Terem Moffi and Jeremie Boga featured during Nice’s 0-1 loss to Angers.

Maurice was back at the training centre two days after the incident, working in an oppressive atmosphere. He has been described as dignified and even closer to the dressing room, holding talks with several players. Head coach Franck Haise has long viewed him as a quiet presence close to players and staff.

Bocquet said that when they spoke on the Monday, and later when Haise mooted a three-way resignation, quitting was not Maurice’s mindset. He added that what happens next depends on Maurice’s psychological state, with the winter window a month away. A week on, Maurice remains in post, and Haise believes there will be a clear before and after for everyone.
