Florian Wirtz Frustrated as Liverpool Drop More Points Against Nottingham Forest

Liverpool rescued a point at Anfield, but nobody inside the home dressing room will be dressing this up as progress. A 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest meant more dropped points, more defensive questions and another reminder that fight alone does not win league matches.

Florian Wirtz said as much afterwards when speaking to liverpoolfc.com, and he did not waste words. “I’m very disappointed,” he said. “Of course we demand from ourselves the most.

“We couldn’t take the three points again, that’s why I’m disappointed. We have to keep working on the things we can do better and we have to get back to winning ways.”

Liverpool reaction falls short of result

Forest struck first through Dan Ndoye’s assist for Victor Munoz in the 24th minute, and Liverpool were chasing the game from there. They improved after the break and found an equaliser when Alexander Isak converted from close range in the second half.

Then came the familiar problem. Liverpool got back on terms and immediately handed Forest another opening. Morgan Gibbs-White converted from the spot to restore the visitors’ lead, exposing the same defensive frailties that have cost points too often.

Wirtz was clear about the issue. “Of course, we were 1-0 down so we had to push a little bit more,” he said. “That was the manager’s tactic as well.

“I think we were doing better in the second half and then just after we scored, we conceded the penalty. This can happen, but not today.

“I’ve not seen the situation [back], I don’t know if it was a penalty or not, but I think the problem was probably before, that we came into this situation.

“We have to do better, defend quicker, be quicker in the positions. I’m just disappointed about the result.”

Victor Munoz earns Liverpool a point

Liverpool did salvage something. In the 82nd minute, Victor Munoz scored his first goal for the club with a sharp finish off the underside of the bar after a Wirtz pass. It was a fine moment, and it stopped the afternoon turning uglier.

Wirtz acknowledged the response, but only up to a point. “Yeah, of course, that was good.

“But we want more, we don’t want to be proud of that we came back into the game after we conceded, we want to be on top of the opponents and want to be better than them and take the wins.”

That is the correct verdict. Liverpool showed character, created enough to stay alive and got a contribution from Munoz and Isak. It still was not enough.

As for the scorers, Wirtz added: “I’m happy for these two guys, they deserved it. They are really working hard in training and every game. Very happy for them.”
