Flynn Downes has become central to Southampton’s seven-match unbeaten run in the Championship, anchoring a platform of robust defending and clean sheets.
"He needs a certain energy to then perform the way that he is at the moment. I think he had an unbelievable performance at Leicester. He put himself full of painkillers and managed to run 12.7 kilometers. This will be a very important period for us as a football club, and we need him in full health." he told the Daily Echo.
Since overcoming the stomach illness that sidelined him earlier in the season, Downes has rediscovered the form that helped deliver promotion in 2023/24.
Operating as a defensive midfielder, he supplies energy and bite, stacking up tackles, interceptions and recoveries at solid rates in 2025/26. He competes well in the air and sits among the top 12% of Championship midfielders for defensive contribution.
On the ball he keeps Saints moving with simple passes. His 87.7% completion highlights reliability rather than the defence-splitting variety.
End product is limited, with one goal and no assists, and his dribbling and progression can slow transitions in tight games.
He has proved durable enough for back-to-back outings, aiding Eckert’s midfield rotation, but discipline is a concern at nine yellows, one from a two-match ban.
