Phil Foden says City are hungry to try to make history once again as the countdown accelerates to the start of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

City are one of 32 teams who will be going for glory in the United States across June and July as part of the freshly expanded tournament.

Starting on 18 June, Pep Guardiola’s side will contest Group G alongside Moroccan club Wydad, Abu-Dhabi-based Al Ain and Italian giants Juventus – with the top two to progress to the knockout stages.

It’s all live and free on DAZN in most countries around the world, with a free, registered account all you need to sign up!

And speaking to FIFA ahead of the tournament, England international Foden said the prospect of being the first-ever winners of the newly formatted Club World Cup was a huge extra motivation for the City players.

“Speaking to a few of the lads, we’ve spoken about that – being the first on the trophy would be nice,” said Foden as he looked ahead to the new showpiece tournament.

“So, that’s definitely the aim and, with the players that we have and the quality that we have in the team, I am pretty sure we’re more than capable of doing that.

“Obviously, it’s the best of the best teams all around the world.

“I hope the atmosphere is amazing – I’m sure it will be – and, obviously, to play at different venues, that’s something that I’m looking forward to.

“You know, the stadiums, the fans, playing against the best teams – that’s what you want to do: play against the best people, the best players.

“I want the challenge of playing against the best teams, and playing in different stadiums, different scenarios.

“It’s about experiencing different things in life and, like I said there, I’m just looking forward to it. It’s exciting.

“It’s going to be something new for us that we have not experienced before but, like I said, it’s really good to have this competition

“So, yeah, I’m just looking forward to it.”

City are no strangers to playing in the United States, having enjoyed several successful summer tours there, most latterly in both 2022 and 2024.

Our three games in Group G of the Club World Cup will see Guardiola’s side play in Philadelphia against Wydad AC on Wednesday June 18 (17.00 UK), then move on to Atlanta where we will take on Al Ain FC on Monday June 22 (02.00 UK)  and then Orlando for a final group clash against Juventus on Thursday June 26 (20.00 UK).

From his perspective, Foden said he was eagerly looking forward to having the opportunity to play in front of City’s Stateside supporters once again.

“Yeah, it’s, obviously, good for them,” the Academy graduate added.

“Because, obviously, travelling over here [to Manchester] to see games would be really difficult, so, I’m sure they are going to be buzzing to see us up close.

“So, they’ll get to see us play a match, so, yeah, I’m really happy for them, and, hopefully, we can put on a performance and, hopefully, get the win for them.”
