La Gantoise will bank €2.6m from Malick Fofana’s switch to Sunderland, triggered by the profit-share clause set when he joined OL in January 2024.

OL announced the transfer at 1.15am on Thursday. The club confirmed a €30m fee plus €5m in bonuses, and a 12.5% share of any profit on a future sale, Le Progres reports.

Such clauses can prove valuable, as seen with Bruno Guimarães’s move from Newcastle to Arsenal that brought OL about €7.5m. For now, with the club under time pressure, this deal is less lucrative than hoped.

Fofana arrived from La Gantoise on 10 January 2024 and signed through to 30 June 2028. His move cost €17m plus up to €5m in bonuses, with La Gantoise due 20% of any future profit.

That mechanism is now activated. The profit stands at €13m excluding bonuses, so La Gantoise collects €2.6m from the fixed sum.

OL’s gain is €10.4m before any future add-ons are triggered.
