Paulo Fonseca offered some further assessments on AC Milan’s defeat against Bayer Leverkusen in an interview with the club’s official media channel, and he reiterated his belief that they should have had a penalty.

Victor Boniface got the only goal early in the second half after the home side had dominated the first 45 minutes, yet Milan missed some big chances and can feel unlucky not to have been awarded at least one penalty.

Fonseca spoke to Milan TV at the end of the game to give his immediate thoughts on a frustrating night from a result standpoint but an encouraging one in terms f the performance.

What is your overall analysis of the match?

“I honestly think the result is not fair, because we created so many clear chances in the second half. We have this penalty, which I have already watched, which is clear, but above all because the team played well, created so many chances which is not easy against a team like Bayer.

“It is difficult because we lost, but I think it was the match that I liked the most of the team. For this reason it is true, in the dressing room there is a strange atmosphere because we deserved a different result, but I think we did everything.

“The team played well, created several chances against a team like Bayer. We have to move forward and as I said it is the match that I liked the most since I have been at Milan.”

The positive trend does not stop today with this defeat, right?

“No. It is true that we did not win, but there has been an improvement in our growth. It was evident. I am obviously sad because the players deserved another result, they played with great courage, they created several occasions. For this reason we must move forward, because the growth is evident.”

And this is the spirit with which we go to Florence with on Sunday…

“The spirit is always the same: to win. Today we came here to win. Sunday will be another match, with other characteristics. But we want to win, to continue our path, with victories, but I believe more when we leave the field with a match like this, playing like this, creating like this. It’s easier to understand that the team is growing even if we haven’t won.”
