The media would have you believe that Paulo Fonseca is a man very much under pressure given that results for AC Milan this season have not been adequate.
Milan are not heading into the festive period in a very cheerful spirit, given that they are eighth in the league and now eight points off the Champions League places. Naturally, it has been met with reports about the security of Fonseca’s job, with some suggestions the Verona game could be decisive.
His task has been made more difficult due to the number of injuries he currently has to deal with, but time is running out to engineer a turnaround. Verona meanwhile are one point above the bottom three, so this is a game that – at least on paper – should be very winnable.
Fonseca spoke to the reporters who gathered at Milanello on the eve of the Verona game during his pre-match press conference. He was asked about what the atmosphere within the squad is like amid the external noise and protests.
“I know how things are, you don’t have the chance to watch the training sessions. Maybe one of these days you come and watch them to see the team’s atmosphere: it’s beautiful,” he said.
“It’s always good to have a good atmosphere. It was a week like any other, with a good climate for working. When it’s like that it’s easier to work. I’ve never felt the team without confidence after the match, without the desire to work, with sadness… I’ve never felt this.
