Alex Meyer played his first UEFA Champions League match even before making his Bundesliga debut. The goalkeeper has been with Dortmund for four years. He has filled in for Gregor Kobel, BVB’s No. 1 goalkeeper, 26 times, keeping seven clean sheets. On Tuesday, the veteran had a very special evening. After nearly two years, he finally got to play again—and “right here at home, in Hamburg,” said the goalkeeper, who was born in Bad Oldesloe.

Friends, family—everyone was there when Meyer took the field with BVB on Tuesday evening for the Pokal match against HEBC. “I spent seven years at HSV, was a ball boy here at the stadium, and used to go to the stadium with my father,” he recalled afterward, following the convincing 5-0 victory: “That’s why this was something special for me. And to finally be back on the field after such a long time: for me personally, there’s nothing better than that.”

He’d had to wait a long time. Nearly 22 months lay between his 25th appearance (on Nov. 9, 24, in Mainz) and his 26th. “I played a lot in the first two years. Then, of course, you get a taste for it, even if you’re only the number two. Now I was happy that the coach gave me the chance.
