Mason Greenwood (22) officially became an Olympique de Marseille player yesterday evening when the French club announced that they had completed the transfer for the English forward from his formative club Manchester United.

Greenwood had been strongly pursued by Marseille this summer with the French club beating Lazio and Napoli to the Englishman’s signature, regardless of the external pressure shown by the mayor of the city and domestic and sexual violence support groups who had strongly criticised Marseille’s interest in the player.

Greenwood had been charged in 2022 with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. In 2023, these charges were dropped after the CPS revealed that key witnesses had withdrawn their cooperation and new material had come to light. Greenwood has denied the allegations.

Mason Greenwood: ‘I’m focused on what I have to do with my club’

Despite only being a Marseille player for less than a day, Greenwood was given the chance to speak to the French media in his first press conference for the club. When asked about his hopes of returning to the England national team, Greenwood did not quite close the door on his interest in playing for the nation, suggesting instead that it could be a future conversation for after his debut season.

Greenwood stated, “For this season I will concentrate on Marseille. I can’t wait to play at the Stade Vélodrome in front of its magnificent crowd. I’m focused on what I have to do with my club. I’m someone who likes to express myself on the pitch through my offensive qualities. I like to assist and score.”

Greenwood had been linked with swapping eligibility to instead play for Jamaica with it appearing highly unlikely that the forward would be picked again for England. However, with this latest comment, it’ll have to be seen whether Greenwood will hold out hope for another selection.
